The parish church in Holbeton is mentioned in Simon Jenkins’ book “England’s Thousand Best Churches” (1999 – The Penguin Press). Originally built in the latter part of the 14th. Century it was extensively restored by J.D.Sedding for the Mildmay family in the 1880’s. The restoration contains a strong flavour of the Arts and Crafts Movement, particularly visible in Sedding’s designs for the pew ends.
Internally, the church is divided by a screen of close tracery, said to include carvings that may have come from wrecked ships of the Spanish Armada (1588). Above the church, the spire rises to 150 feet above the close-knit village of Holbeton and rolling hills of south Devon.
Supporting the spire is a tower containing a peal of six bells. In 1997 The Friends of All Saints was registered as a charity for the purposes of maintaining, preserving and adorning the fabric of the building. The church is open every day and well worth a visit.
